They say that beyond the dunes, where the wind erases footprints before they can become paths, lived Pharaoh Vandaah.

She wore no ordinary crown. Her crown was made of pyramids, as though the whole desert had placed its history upon her brow. Her face seemed composed of several faces, hidden within one another, and her eyes looked both toward the present and toward something far older.

One day a Bedouin appeared at the edge of her realm. He had brought no gifts and asked for nothing. He had travelled far, following a story that no one had ever managed to tell him to the end.

When he saw Vandaah, he knew he had reached the place he had been seeking.

The Pharaoh did not speak. She simply looked at him. Between them settled the desert's silence, heavy and clear.

The Bedouin understood then that he had not come to discover a treasure, but to recognize something that had always been there.

Perhaps a memory. Perhaps a face. Perhaps a story waiting to be seen.

And Vandaah remained in the heart of the desert, the pyramids rising from her crown, keeping the mystery of that encounter to herself.

For some stories do not begin when they are written. They begin the moment someone sees them.

At the sultan's court there was a troupe of performers whose origins no one knew.

They appeared only at night, when torches lit the courtyard and the musicians began to play. They wore brightly coloured masks, wigs, feathers and clothes so strange that people laughed before the performance even began.

The jesters could imitate anyone: the vizier, the captain of the guard, rich merchants, even the sultan. But there was one rule: they must never remove their masks before an audience.

Years passed. The performances grew better and the masks more expressive. Eventually no one remembered what the performers really looked like. Not even they themselves.

One night after a show, one of the jesters tried to take off her mask. She pulled at its edge, but it would not move. Another helped her, then a third. It was no use.

The masks were no longer masks. They had become their faces.

Frightened, they went to the sultana, the only person said to see the truth even when it hid behind a face.

The sultana studied them for a long time. “Why do you want to remove your mask?” she asked. “To see my true face.” “And what if this is your true face now?”

The jester fell silent.

The sultana ordered mirrors to be brought. But each mirror showed a different face: joy, fear, vanity, sorrow.

“A person does not have just one face,” said the sultana. “The danger begins when they forget they are wearing one.”

The jesters returned to the stage the next evening. They no longer hid their masks or tried to remove them. They wore them knowingly.

From then on, their performances did more than make people laugh. They made people recognize themselves.

They say that in a desert where people had long forgotten the sound of water, a man travelled on a flying carpet.

He carried no waterskins, jugs or provisions. He had only a long blue beard, which those who met him thought was made of silk. But his beard was water.

One day the carpet reached a land so dry that the sand seemed to expect nothing more from the sky. The man stopped. His beard began to flow over the edge of the carpet and, for the first time in centuries, the roar of a waterfall was heard in the desert.

The water struck the ground. The sand received it and made room for it. The waterfall became a stream; the stream widened, and the earth around it began to turn green. First one palm grew, then another, then dozens.

Among them appeared a palace, its walls half hidden by leaves, as if it had always been waiting there for the water to wake it.

The man on the carpet looked down without surprise. He knew that water does not always create new things. Sometimes it reveals what the desert has kept hidden.

Then another man rose from the edge of the waterfall. His body had neither flesh nor bones. It was made entirely of water. His face formed and dissolved with the waves, but his eyes remained clear.

“Who are you?” the traveller asked. “I am the one born whenever water reaches a place where no one expected it.”

At that moment a vast face appeared above the oasis. A woman with blue eyes watched from one side, almost touching the sky. She was the Spirit of the Waters.

She neither commanded nor owned the water. She guarded it. She knew the springs beneath mountains, the rains that had yet to fall and every drop ever lost in the sand.

“Why did you let the water fall here?” the spirit asked the man on the carpet. “Because I saw a place that lacked something.” The spirit smiled. “No. You saw a place that remembered water.”

Then the man understood that he had not made the miracle. He had merely been the way by which the water returned.

The carpet set off again across the dunes. But the waterfall remained. The palms grew, the palace filled with people, and travellers began to search for the oasis said to have appeared in a single day.

Few found it. The Spirit of the Waters hid it from those who came to take, and showed it only to those who came to seek.

Sometimes, when the sun is fierce and the air trembles above the sand, those who look up can glimpse a flying carpet. On it sits a man with a blue beard.

And if a single drop falls from his beard into the desert, somewhere in a place we do not yet know, a palm tree begins to grow.

One evening, a woman whom no one had invited arrived at the sultan's court.

She wore no jewellery, had no servants and did not bow when she entered. She simply stopped before them.

The first sultana looked straight at her without turning her face. Only her eyes shifted sideways. The sultan frowned.

Beside him, the other sultana, with long blue hair, stood motionless. Her hair flowed over her shoulders like a river. A child was hidden among its strands. No one had noticed him.

The child did not look at the stranger. He watched his mother. He wanted to understand why her hand had tensed, why the sultan's eyes had turned cold and why the other sultana suddenly seemed so uneasy.

A fourth adult stood farther away. Some people, when a storm begins, neither flee nor try to stop it. They stand far enough away to say later that they were not there. He was one of them.

“What are you doing here?” asked the sultan. The woman did not answer. “You were banished from the palace,” said the first sultana. The woman remained silent. “You were ordered never to return,” said the one with blue hair.

Then the woman smiled. It was not a happy smile, but the smile of someone who knows something the others would rather forget.

“I did not come back for you,” she said.

For the first time the child looked away from his mother. The room fell silent. “Then for whom?” asked the sultan.

The woman slowly raised her hand and pointed to the child.

The blue-haired sultana stepped back. Her hair moved and, for a moment, hid the child's face completely.

“Do not dare,” she said. “One day he will ask,” the woman replied. “What will you tell him then?”

The sultan rose. “Enough!” But the woman was unafraid.

“You can banish a person from a palace. You can erase a name from books. You can order servants to forget. But you cannot order a story never to have existed.”

The child continued to watch his mother. He no longer tried to understand who the woman was. He tried to understand why his mother feared her. That was a far more dangerous question.

At last the woman turned and left as she had come: alone. No one tried to stop her.

The fourth adult lowered his eyes. Perhaps he knew the truth. Perhaps he had even been there when the story began. But he said nothing.

Years later, people told different versions of that evening. Some said she had been a former sultana, others a sister, others that she had come to claim something that belonged to her.

No one ever discovered the truth. Or perhaps someone did: the child.

Of everyone in the room, he alone had not looked where the others looked. While the adults watched the woman from the past, the child watched his mother's face.

Sometimes the truth is not on the face of the accused. It is on the face of the person looking at them.

In the desert there are roads you can see and roads that can see you.

One evening, as the sun sank over the sand and the camels became tiny shadows on the horizon, a young traveller came upon three enormous faces. He did not know whether they were people, spirits or memories. One face watched him from the left, one from the right, and the third seemed to emerge between them.

“Which way leads to the city with blue gates?” he asked. The first face answered, “Go where your eyes are afraid to look.” The second said, “Go where your heart has been before, though you do not remember.”

The third, small and pale, said nothing. It simply bowed its head, as if listening to the sand.

The traveller grew angry. He had come for directions, not riddles. Then he noticed something strange: at the edge of one face were two more eyes, one above the other, looking away from the rest.

“How many faces do you have?” he asked. “As many as it takes to see one story from several sides,” the woman replied.

The young man looked toward the caravan. The camels moved slowly onward without asking questions. At that moment he understood that the city did not need to be found. It needed to be followed.

He set off after the caravan. When he turned around, the faces were gone. Only the vast, quiet desert remained, and three shadows merged in the sand.

They say that those who lose their way in that land should not look for signs along the road. They need only study the faces they meet. Sometimes a road hides in a glance.

In the sultan's palace there was a room men were not allowed to enter.

It was not the harem, though that was what people who had never seen it called it. It was neither the sultana's chamber nor the room where the women kept their jewellery. It was the chamber of the blue mirror.

The mirror covered an entire wall and had been brought centuries earlier from a sunken city. It was not made of glass but of water that never flowed or dried.

People said it did not show the face of the person looking into it. It showed all the women living within that face.

One night a young sultana entered alone. She had recently been chosen to live in the palace and, ever since she arrived, everyone had told her who she ought to become.

She had to be beautiful but not proud. Quiet but not cold. Obedient but never sad. She had to smile when watched and disappear when her presence was no longer wanted.

At first the water showed her one face: the face others saw, beautiful, attentive and still. Its blue eyes had learned to look without revealing anything. Then the water stirred.

On the left another woman appeared. She had dark hair and stood upright as though guarding an invisible door. “Who are you?” the sultana asked. “I am the woman you were before others told you who to be.”

A vast face rose in the centre of the mirror. One eye remained open, gazing at the past and at something yet to happen. “And you?” “I am the woman who remembers. I keep every word you swallowed, every fear you hid and every answer you were not allowed to give.”

Beside her appeared a third woman, with large, shining eyes. She was not afraid. She looked at the world with the wonder of someone who still believed life could be chosen. “I am the woman who dreams,” she said. “The one you hid so that you could stay here.”

The sultana looked at all three. “Then who am I?”

The water moved again. On the right appeared a woman without clothes. She wore no jewels, veils or signs of rank. Her body neither asked to be admired nor tried to hide. She stood free.

“Cover yourself!” the sultana whispered, looking fearfully toward the door. The woman smiled. “From whom?”

The sultana had no answer.

“I am the woman who belongs to no one,” the woman in the mirror continued. “I am not what men see, nor what women envy. I am neither the title you were given nor the place where you were put. I am who remains when all of that disappears.”

“Which of you is the real one?” asked the sultana.

The four faces looked at her. “All of us,” replied the free woman. “And none of us, if you choose to live only through other people's eyes.”

In that moment the sultana understood that the palace had not imprisoned her between its walls. It had imprisoned her in a single face.

She approached the mirror and touched the water with her fingertips. The four women blurred, drew closer and, for an instant, became one being.

In the morning the servants found the chamber empty.

The sultana had not vanished from the palace. She was still there, wearing the same clothes and answering to the same name. But something had changed.

She no longer smiled when she did not feel like smiling. She no longer stayed silent when she had something to say. And she no longer lowered her eyes when someone looked at her.

People in the palace whispered that the blue mirror had taken her mind. Only the women knew the truth.

The mirror had taken nothing. It had returned the other three women she had been forced to forget.

On the bank of a river that appeared on no map, a woman was braiding her hair.

She came there every evening, after the lights came on in the city. She sat on the same stone, loosened her hair and began dividing it into three strands. She worked slowly, with steady fingers.

The woman had no eyes.

In the city, people said she had lost them because she had seen something forbidden. Others said she had given them to someone she loved. No one dared ask her.

One evening, a boy who had come to fill a pitcher stopped beside her.

“How do you find your way here?”

“The water brings me.”

The boy looked at the river. It flowed almost silently.

“And how do you know where your hair ends?”

The woman smiled.

“That I still don’t know.”

He sat a little farther away and watched her. As the braid grew, the strands became thicker. Moonlight slid over them, leaving little silver patches like scales. The end of her hair slipped off the stone, touched the sand and moved.

The boy held his pitcher to his chest.

A cobra rose from the braid.

It slowly spread its hood and remained facing the water. It had two blue eyes, so clear that the boy could see the moon reflected in them.

The woman kept braiding.

“Is it yours?” he whispered.

“It is me.”

The cobra turned its head towards the boy, and the woman smiled again.

“There’s a crack in your pitcher. Near the handle.”

He felt the clay. She was right.

“Do you see through its eyes?”

“Yes.”

The boy looked from the woman to the snake.

“Aren’t you afraid to let your eyes go so far away from you?”

Her fingers paused for a moment.

“At first I was. I called it back at every rustle. I wanted it to look only where I told it to.”

“And now?”

“Now I let it show me.”

The cobra leaned over the water. The woman raised her chin slightly. An expression crossed her face that the boy could not understand: wonder, perhaps, or recognition.

“What do you see?”

She was silent for a long time.

“A place I haven’t reached yet.”

The boy filled his pitcher and left for the city. When he turned to look back, the woman was undoing her braid.

The cobra was slowly sinking towards her hands, and its blue eyes were disappearing among the strands.

The next day, people asked him what he had seen by the river.

The boy thought of the woman, the snake and the path they shared.

“Someone learning to see farther,” he said.
